Express Yourself Contest - POETRY CONTEST 31 (USE OF ALLITERATION & METAPHORS) UPDATED WITH ENTRIES
{ contest closes 6th August 2008 9.00 AM }
Thank You Shantala ji for all the encouragement and for introducing us to newer forms of verse-writing. I have been a late entrant into the EYCs and I was delighted that my very first attempt was applauded like this.
I hope I do justice to the next contest.
Carrying the EYC to it's next level, let us try something different again.
We all may have done this consciously or sub-consciously in our poems. Poetry uses a variety of figures of speech. I introduce two of them here:
Alliteration and Metaphors.
Alliteration: When we use the same consonant in several words in the lines of a poem, it's called alliteration. The repetitive letters create a particular sound in the poem. (There is no hard & fast rule that every line in a poem has to be written with alliteration. Alliteration can be thought of as an embellishment.)
Examples:
Summer of Sixty Seven
Suave sailors of Sinbad
Meddling methods of our media
Mirage in the mist?
Misty mountains and mirages? (Right, Shantala ji?
)
Metaphors: When we compare the subject of discussion to another unrelated item, person or object, it's called a metaphor. Unlike similies that make use of comparative words like 'like' and 'as', metaphors directly declare the subject to be the object to which it's being compared to.
Examples:
1. The warrior was a wounded lion. (Simile version would be "the warrior was like a wounded lion in the battle.)
2. Mother Teresa was a fairy in disguise.
3. You are my sun, moon and stars.
Let us restrict Poetry Contest No 31 to Alliteration and Metaphors. The photos that I have chosen are pasted at the end.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The rules of the contest will be the same:
- FOR REFERENCE: Please visit the originating EYC post here: http://yash-chhabra.sulekha.com/blog/post/2007/10/poetry-story-caption-contest-week-1.htm
- Let your thoughts flow in a gush till 5th August 2008 (IST).
Results will be out on the 6th August 2008 (IST) latest by 6.00 PM
- Let the image guide but not confine your imagination.
- Time and space mandate that your expressions should not be in excess of 500 words.
- Upon conclusion, we would have identified the next person to run the show for another week. And, believe me! That is an exhilarating feeling. You will know it when you search for images in your mind.
- Let’s be sensitive to the public forum and refrain from putting up vulgar posts.
- Let’s maintain originality, in English. Writing in Hindi will add to the flavour.
- If inspiration goads you to post multiple creative works, there are no limits on expressions. For the sake of the contest, however, only your first among multiple entries will be considered.
- Every blog entry should be submitted in the comments section of this blog post AS A LINK TO UR POST to make it eligible for the contest. To do that, place the cursor on that top line (with http:// etc.) and right click. After right click one right click on COPY and then left clicks on PASTE to put it into the comments.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I hope I have explained the contest clearly. Go on... start writing, all you budding as well as established poets and writers of Sulekha!!
The entries will be posted in this blog datewise along with the links.
Ocean Nymph

Swapped places?

NOTE:
The figures of speech are just a means of encouraging Sulekha writers to try out something new... other than the usual which we always do. But they are not hard and fast requirements of the contest. Poems without them will also be considered as fair entries. The main aim of the contest is to encourage creativity.

MAHUMMA JI'S ENTRY: (Since she could not post it in her blog due to some technical error, she has submitted the poem through a note. So, I am posting her entry here directly.)
Future of the fish is bouncing,
bowl’s bowel is craving,
cat caressing and cajoling
in its crystal clear water.
Nymph nurturing the fulmar,
a floating feather in the suave sea.
Tickling the tides
with her tender touch.
Nymph a novelty is ocean’s notion.
Cat a cradling baby is water’s wish.
Let the lovers meet
And share their shimmering thoughts.
